Phnom Penh: On December 8, 2022, at the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, Mr. Alan Symonette, President of the National Academy of Arbitrators, United States and Canada (National Academy of Arbitrators) led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on HE Dr. Ith Sam Heng, Minister of Labor and Vocational Training, for the purpose of understanding and exchanging experiences in the field of labor, especially the mechanism for resolving out-of-court labor disputes in Cambodia, and some important points, such as referral of cases to the Arbitration Council, service expansion Of the Arbitration Council, the Dispute Resolution Procedure, as well as to examine the feasibility of building cooperation and partnership between the National Arbitration Academy and the Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training of Cambodia.
The Minister shared information on the development and growth of the labor sector in Cambodia, which began at a time when Cambodia was gradually growing, and Cambodia signed a trade agreement linking international labor standards with the United States. In managing the labor sector, Cambodia has continued to work hard to implement the Labor Law, which was adopted in 1997 and has incorporated the contents of the 13 ILO conventions that Cambodia has ratified, including eight core conventions. The Royal Government’s high commitment to protect the rights and interests of both workers and employers.
Mr. Alan Symonette thanked the Minister for sharing good information as well as Cambodia’s experience in labor management. On that occasion, he also shared the experience of the National Academy of Arbitration of the United States and Canada, which began to evolve since its inception in 1940, which now has more than 600 members, which is recognized as an independent institution to deal with. Non-judicial labor disputes in the United States and Canada, which are trusted by workers and employers.
